A.B.A.T.E. of West Virginia, Inc. Bylaws Article II - Purpose The purpose of this organization, being a non-profit corporation, is: A. To promote motorcycle awareness and safety education to its membership and the general public. B. To promote and better the image of motorcycling. C. To monitor and influence legislative matters pertaining to motorcycles. D. To educate all interested motorcyclists in how to become active in politics in the party of their choice. ABATE of West Virginia is an Educational, and Rights Organization. Our only charity is us. It takes money to run the Org, and accomplish our goals. If Chapters choose to do charity runs as a means of keeping their membership interested during the summer we have no problem. But the charity you choose should be kept local, because ALL the "Big Charities" take 25% or more in administrative costs, and we end up doing all the work for free. Most all of the big charities have been known to argue in favor of helmet laws in the past. We refuse to support our enemies regardless of their cause. If the chapters support a charity we insist the charity support us with the dollar a head. As long as we get a turnout at the capitol in January, and participation in the legislative process when requested. We are not a charitable organization. How did this come about? ABATEs across the country are the ones that started Biker Charity so show our human side to the general public. I, Duck, was there when it happened. We thought it was a good idea at the time. We recruited lots of members during that time. But that wasn't necessarily a good thing. By focusing on quantity instead of quality we ended up with an organization that gave away 100 times more money than we invested in our legislative goals. The ratio was about the same for the people that couldn't give a shit about the actual purpose of ABATE. We ended up still having a Helmet Law, with no money, no participation in legislation, and new leadership that thought that was OK as long as they got on TV. Today, public perception of Bikers is not much different than it was back then. When ABATE does a charity, and gets favorable publicity from the media, you get on the 6:0clock news. What does Joe Public remember from your five seconds of fame? "The BIKERS" did it! Almost every Club, Riding Group, Shop, and Bar do charity now. It don't mater which group does it, all Joe Public sees is, the "BIKERS" did it. So, we let the "BIKERS" do it. We are not against charity. It's a good thing. But it does not change public perception, and it attracts people that don't really care about their rights. We'd rather have 10 hardcore Freedom Fighters than 10,000 people with a different agenda. Our purpose is Bikers Rights, and the Education of the general public by teaching them not to run over us, and the education of motorcyclists to keep them from killing themselves by committing stupid, and on how to become politically active to protect their rights, and regain the ones that have been lost. I hope this clarifies our policy on ABATE & Charity. Don "Duck" Smith, ABATE of WV, Inc. Communications Officer |
